Men's Guide To Dressing For A Job Interview
There’s some sort of assumption out there that men have it easy when it comes to dressing for an interview, right? Throw on some dress slacks, a button-down and a tie and you’re good to go. However, you know that this is very far from the truth. Men have it just as hard as women when it comes to looking just right the interview of their dreams, and preparation is key!
Do your research when planning your outfit
You’ve done your research for the interview as far as the company’s credentials and what kind of role you are going to play within in — good job! — but you also have to make sure that you do your research regarding the culture. Do people wear a suit and a tie? Are they more laid back with jeans and a tee? Understanding what kind of work environment you are walking into will hep you plan your outfit and go into the interview feeling confident and in control.
If you need to, get a friends to drop into the establishment and give you the details on what they see employees wearing. It can be helpful for what not to do as much as what to do.
Dress for the position you want to hold
Part of earning how to dress for an interview as a male is going to be dressing to impress. If you are interviewing for a good position with benefits and a lot of prestige, dress like it! If you want your interviewer to see just how determined you are to do well with the position, you need to show them through your outfit as much as through your resume.
No matter what: make sure its wrinkle-free and fits well
From dress slacks to a tie, you have to make sure that everything you are wearing is steamed, pressed and ready to impress when you walk into that interview room. Wrinkled clothing means that you just rolled out of bed, so make that extra effort even if it’s inconvenient.
Simultaneously, your clothing shouldn’t be obviously borrowed from a friend. Get tailored pieces (they can easily be worth their money as staples in your closet) so that it’s obvious that you are dressing to impress and that you have put time and effort into your outfit.
Go for the classics
Lastly, for the outfit items themselves, you’ll want to stick to the classics when you are walking into your first interview. Go with a button-down top, preferably long sleeved, and with a straight or tapered fit. Not too tight, of course, but a natural shape. For with ties that are going to be coordinated but not so much of a statement that they stand out in a garish way.
Don’t forget to wear coordinated socks! You might be able to get away with mismatched or wild socks elsewhere, but an interview is not going to be the best way for you to explore this part of your originality — not yet, anyway.
